Today the EU leaders also agreed to cooperate more on economic policy with the Europe 2020 plan. Three quantitative targets were set: increasing employment, boosting research and development spending as well as "meeting the EU's environmental commitments". Despite the Europe 20/20/20 being quite a modest commitment, it is actually a complicated process to coordinate all member states' efforts in this direction. With the "national reform programmes"the EU-states should describe their plan to address those issues and guarantee economic growth.

how come bulgaria and greece are so interconnected - any intuitive explanation??
ReplyDeleteWell, there is a significant number of Bulgarian women (mostly in their 40-50, but also younger), who are employed as domestic workers in Greece. It would be difficult to acquire exact statistics on that since many of them are not registered. The geographic proximity allows a three hour bus ride from Thessaloniki to Sofia.
ReplyDeleteThese women make transfer payments to their families in Bulgaria and inevitably depend on the credit institutions. One wouldn't know however if this is the reason why Greek banks invested in Bulgaria on the first place, yet the migrant workers do make use of the banking system.
